long-term potentiation

A long lasting enhancement in synaptic transmission between two neurons, most commonly studied in the synapse between the Schaffer collateral axons of the CA3 neurons and the CA1 pyramidal neurons of the hippocampus. Alongside the LTD (long-term depression) represent the two mechanisms of memory formation and storage. Impairment of this process in AD is caused by soluble oligmoeric amyloid beta.
